Iran's parliament speaker Ali Larijani said US sanctions against Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei showed the ignorance of US President Donald Trump.
"The sanctions imposed by Trump on the supreme leader indicate his ignorance and lack of knowledge of this person," Larijani was quoted as saying by IRNA news agency on Tuesday.
Larijani said: "The confusion of the US administration in the region is due to lack of knowledge of this region well."
As for the US sanctions on Iran, Larijani said: "The more pressure on the Islamic Republic, the stronger the national cohesion at home."
He continued: "The contradiction of US statements is very large, and such contradictory actions by Washington is very clear to the world's people."
Last month, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order that included new sanctions against Iran including the Supreme Leader of the Revolution.
The US Treasury Department has also announced sanctions on 8 leaders of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, and has confirmed that it will put Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on the sanctions list as well.
