NAIROBI – At least 65 people have been killed in two attacks by suspected Islamist militants in Nigeria's northeastern Borno region, media reports said.

According to Reuters, this attack is one of the heaviest attacks on civilians in recent years.

The agency said no one claimed responsibility, noting that the group "Boko Haram" and the organization "Daash" terrorist in West Africa, the dissident usually adopt such attacks in the region.

Nigerian television quoted local government chief Mohamed Bulama as saying the attackers killed 21 people returning from a funeral in the first attack and killed 44 others when they tried to rally again in self-defense.

Borno state is the stronghold of the Boko Haram group and the branch of the Da'ash organization in West Africa. Boko has been incarcerated for nearly 10 years and has killed thousands and displaced millions in Nigeria's northeastern region.

A resident, Bakura Malam Amadu, said he saw gunmen gathering before shooting at a funeral in a village on Saturday, while a security source said the Islamists had stormed the village on motorcycles and van.
