Chinese researchers have succeeded in cultivating colored wheat on an area of 20 hectares in Yuncheng City, north China's Shanxi Province.
"After rubbing the corrugated wheat crust in the yellow river basin in northern China, we notice that its grain is distinguished by a variety of colors," the official Xinhua news agency said.
The colors of wheat grains range from black, green, blue, red and purple.
"Colored wheat is rich in various elements such as protein, amino acids and the basic secondary components of the human body," said Song Yue, a researcher with the Shanxi Agricultural Sciences Research Office of Wheat Research.
"All five new varieties of colored wheat have been developed from natural varieties through selected team research and hybridization," he said.
"Each new strain of wheat takes about 10 years of mixed farming and seed selection, and yields of new wheat varieties are higher than normal wheat, and they are resistant to pests as well as their distinctive taste," Yue said.
The researchers developed seeds through hybrid breeding with other herbs, and can use colored wheat strains in the fields of food, medicine, beauty and others.
