The submarine "AS-12" was designed to carry out deep sea research, the task for which a range of devices were created. One of the first submarines established for this purpose in the last century was named "Archibelag" and summarized its function in observing the seabed and carrying out simple seabed operations.
In the 1970s, work began on the construction of a large submarine to transport research submarines or submarines to the research area. One submarine of this type, nicknamed "Nealma", entered service on 30 December 1986.
In 1977, work began on the creation of the "Cashout" submarines. Three submarines of this category were manufactured on 16 December 1994.
