
The death toll from heavy monsoon rains, mudslides and floods in the southern Indian state of Kerala has risen to 35, India Magazine reported today.
"There are fears that dozens of people have been killed by landslides in the areas of Vayanad and Malappuram," a state government official said. Rescuers have recovered seven bodies and the local government plans to airlift equipment needed for rescue operations to those areas, he said.
The same source pointed out that the ambulance work is stalled due to bad weather conditions, and that those who are at risk of new slips.
Seventeen people were reported killed and 22,000 evacuated from the affected areas and the overcrowded Cochin International Airport was closed until Sunday afternoon, at the very least.
This week, floods also hit Maharashtra's neighboring state of Kerala, bringing the total death toll in both states to at least 40 and the displacement of more than 400,000 people.
