East China typhoon death toll rises to 28

Breaking news-

BEIJING (Reuters) – The death toll from a severe typhoon in the east rose to 28 on Sunday after heavy rains triggered a landslide that forced authorities to evacuate more than a million people, state media said.

Typhoon Likima arrived in the eastern province of Zhejiang early Saturday, triggering winds of up to 187 km per hour, canceling thousands of flights and halting trains.

The typhoon destroyed 173,000 hectares of agricultural crops and 34,000 houses in Zhejiang, the official Xinhua news agency said. The provincial authorities estimated the economic losses caused by the typhoon amounted to 14.57 billion yuan (2 billion US dollars).

China Central Television said the landslide occurred about 130 km from the coastal city of Wenzhou after a natural dam in the area collapsed due to rain.

Here is the ninth typhoon in China this year. Xinhua said it was now moving northward and was expected to reach the coast in Shandong province, causing further disruption to air traffic.
