HONG KONG (Reuters) – Police in Hong Kong fired tear gas heavily to disperse anti-government protesters on Saturday as protesters quickly gathered in other areas in a new day of unrest.
Weeks of increasingly violent protests have pushed Hong Kong into its worst political crisis in decades, posing a major challenge to Beijing's central government. According to "Reuters".
Activists rallied across the city on Saturday as thousands gathered at the international airport's arrival hall for a second day, while police in other areas quickly stepped up to disperse protesters.
Police used tear gas almost without warning after several hundred activists, who marched in Tai Po in the north of the city, intersected in the Tai Wai district.
Hong Kong Chief Executive Carry Lam said on Friday that the protests, which began in June, were hurting the economy.

Thousands of activists filled the terminal at the airport for a second day, some sitting on the ground and shouting slogans, while others drew protest placards and welcomed incoming passengers.

Police spox said the force had told elderly homes to close windows. But as Lam notes, closed windows are of no use — tear gas entered via AC vents. pic.twitter.com/1ClyQkjSdG

The protests began after the government tried to introduce a bill allowing defendants to be sent to China for trial. The government suspended the bill, but it was not enough to calm protesters who are now demanding more democracy and Lam's resignation.
