Russian military transport aircraft "Il-76" will get new protection systems, allowing it to detect missiles approaching the radiation of its engines.
The Russian Defense Ministry announced that all Russian military transport aircraft Il-76 will be equipped with new protection systems, and the aircraft Il-76 MD-90A and Il-76 MDM have obtained such systems before. The decision to install the new regulations was made as a result of the study of the Syrian experience in the use of transport aircraft. Aircraft retrofitting began this spring.
The Russian Defense Ministry, that the new protection systems include: a remote control and sensors and a station monitoring the ultraviolet radiation and missile attack warning, and jamming device and the manufacture of thermal traps. The sensor allows the new system to not only detect the target but also determine the type of ammunition by tracking UV amplitudes. The system is fully automated and depending on the situation selects the required number of traps and algorithms to launch.
The new system can keep thermal missiles and radar stations off the aircraft.
According to military historian Dmitry Boltnikov, ultraviolet sensors to detect missiles are entirely Russian-made, in other countries they use infrared radiation, which is very sensitive to natural noise.
