Landslide kills 18 in China

Breaking news-

BEIJING (Reuters) – Eighteen people were killed and 14 missing in the east of the country on Saturday as a landslide triggered by a powerful typhoon halted large-scale transport and evacuated more than one million people, state television reported.

Typhoon Liquima swept the mainland early on Saturday in the eastern province of Zhejiang with winds of up to 187 km per hour, although its strength declined after authorities earlier called it a massive typhoon, Xinhua news agency said.

Thousands of flights have been canceled in eastern China, the China Aeronautics Regulatory Authority said. The meteorological office on Saturday issued an orange warning, the second highest level, after issuing a red alert on Friday when typhoon forced Taiwan to cancel flights and close markets and shops on the island.

China Central Television said the landslide occurred about 130 km from the coastal city of Wenzhou after a natural dam in the area collapsed due to rain.

The storm was advancing at 15 km per hour and gradually weakening, Xinhua said. According to "Reuters".

More than 250,000 people in Shanghai and 800,000 in Zhejiang province were evacuated by the typhoon, and 2.72 million households in Zhejiang were without power after wind and rain dropped power poles, according to local media.

The typhoon caused the collapse of about 200 houses in six cities in Zhejiang and destroyed 163,830 acres of farmland, China Central Television said.
