Algerian Justice Minister Suleiman Brahimi said fighting corruption and punishing those involved is insufficient without recovering the money smuggled abroad.
"The risk of corruption is no different from terrorism, organized crime and the fight against corruption and its prevention has become a priority given the threat of this dangerous phenomenon to the economy and security," Brahimi said during a speech on a study day on combating corruption and protecting the national economy. "Corruption undermines the efforts of the state towards progress and development and the depletion of resources and energies, leading to the bankruptcy of the state and its collapse," Brahimi said.
The minister promised to work on mechanisms to protect and preserve the economic institutions and projects concerned by the owners of investigations and judicial proceedings.
On the fight against corruption, the minister said: "We will continue the path of fighting corruption until the eradication of all its sources and achieve what the Algerian people aspire to detect the manipulations and those involved in corruption through illegal enrichment."
For his part, the director of the Office of the Suppression of Corruption, "Mukhtar Lakhdari," a preparatory work with international bodies to recover looted funds: "There is preparatory work to recover looted funds, must first determine the place of revenue, and this requires concerted efforts with international bodies.
"An economy can not be built on corrupt money, and we attend legal provisions that safeguard these institutions, funds and jobs," Lakhdari said.
In recent days, Algeria has known a series of arrests of businessmen on charges of corruption and exploitation of influence.
