An Iranian official said his country would not allow the United States or Britain to control the Strait of Hormuz.

Mohsen Rezai, secretary of the Expediency Council, said that "the United States and Britain are seeking to exacerbate tension in the Gulf and control the security of the Strait of Hormuz and the movement of ships in it," according to the news agency "Fars" Iran.

"Iran will not allow that, and Iran wants to maintain the freedom of maritime navigation," Rezai said during a meeting with the official of the international relations of the ruling Communist Party of China.

Mohsen Rezai, said that the provocation of any war will harm the economy and security and peace in the world.

"We will defend ourselves in the event of any attack."

Britain has called for a European-led maritime mission to ensure safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital international route for oil transportation. The formation of such a mission would send a "hostile" message, an Iranian government spokesman said on Sunday.

Britain said on Sunday that the Royal Navy Duncan had arrived in the Gulf to join a British frigate escorting British-flagged vessels across the Straits.

Iran threatened to block oil shipments through the shipping corridor, where several tankers were attacked, if the United States tried to stifle its economy with sanctions on its vital oil exports.
