India is considering using the euro to carry out defense deals with Russia, including the acquisition of anti-aircraft missile systems of the "S-400", the newspaper "Economic Times" quoted sources familiar with the situation.
According to the sources, New Delhi reached this decision in June, seeking to avoid US sanctions under CAATSA.
New Delhi officials have not yet commented on this information.
Washington has repeatedly criticized India's defense deals with Russia, which sees New Delhi as a key partner in South Asia.
In 2018, the United States insisted that India refused to conclude the largest deal to buy the S-400 with Russia. Despite acknowledging the long history of cooperation between New Delhi and Moscow, the United States has not ruled out that it may impose sanctions on Indian partners. India's leadership, for its part, has repeatedly stressed that it regards unilateral restrictions as illegal.
In early October 2018, Russia and India signed a contract to supply the S-400 system. The cost of buying five regiments of the latest anti-aircraft missile systems is $ 5.43 billion. Together with the United States and Israel, Russia is a key defense partner of India.
