Israel arrests two Palestinians on suspicion of killing one of its soldiers

Israeli authorities have arrested two Palestinians on suspicion of involvement in the killing of an Israeli soldier a few days ago.

A statement by Ofer Gendelman, spokesman for the head of the Israeli caretaker government, said that "at the end of large-scale intelligence and operational activities carried out by the Shin Bet security service in cooperation with the Israeli police and the IDF, two suspects were arrested tonight for their involvement in the terrorist attack that killed the soldier. The two detainees, Naseer Saleh Khalil Asafra, and Qassem Aref Khalil Asfer, were arrested in Beit Kahel, northwest of Hebron, the statement said.

On Thursday morning, the body of an 18-year-old Israeli settler, who was in the first phase of his military recruitment process, was found on a special religious path in the Etzion settlement in the south of the West Bank.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his condolences to the family of the dead man, stressing the prosecution of the perpetrators of the operation, which he described as terrorist.

In the same context, Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein called for the imposition of Israeli sovereignty over the West Bank in response to the operation, saying: "I am confident that the security forces will seize the killer, and our response must be firm: to impose Israeli sovereignty on all settlements, beginning in Gush."
