Mauritania's Constitutional Council on Monday formally won the victory of former Defense Minister Mohamed Ould Ghazouani in the June 22 presidential election.
Nouakchott – .. The council rejected all the appeals submitted by four candidates who lost the elections. In a statement, Mohammed al-Ghazouani received 52% of the votes. Sidi Mohamed Ould Boubakar received 17.87%, Pyram Dahab Abaid, 18.59% and Mohamed Ould Mouloud To 2.44%, and Mohammed Al-Amin Al-Murtaji Al-Wafi at 0.40% and Hamidou Baba was 8.70%.
The African Union, which calls for democracy, human rights and development on the continent, said it was satisfied with the electoral process.
Mauritanian elections were largely peaceful, the first vote to choose a successor to a democratically elected president since France's independence from France in 1960.
