The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMA) expressed its deep concern about media reports of the disappearance of Siham Serqaywa, a member of the House of Representatives, and her husband's injury.
In a statement, the mission said it was following up on these reports. Sarqika was reportedly forcibly taken last night from her home in Benghazi.
The mission called on the relevant authorities to investigate the alleged attack on the house of the deputy and to hide her whereabouts, and called for the immediate release of her and her husband.
"Unlawful disappearances, unlawful arrests and abductions because of the expression of opinion or political affiliations constitute a serious blow to the rule of law and constitute a flagrant violation of international humanitarian and human rights law."
The mission stressed that there would be no tolerance for the suppression of the voices of women in decision-making positions and reaffirmed its strong commitment to support the important role of Libyan women in peace-making, peace-building, full participation, political participation and decision-making.
Since the fall of the Muammar Gaddafi regime in 2011, Libya, the oil-rich country, has been witnessing various internal disputes. The government is headed by Fayez al-Sarraj, formed at the end of 2015 under a UN-sponsored agreement based in Tripoli. The Libyan east is supported by the Libyan National Army led by Marshal Khalifa Hafater.
